This material is primarily for people who are new to the genre known as the Soca music oriented. As an artist who has recorded the soca songs for the last eight years, and who has won Caribbean wide soca competitions, I humbly attempt to present a comprehensive introduction to soca music.
Caribbean Soca music from the island of Trinidad and Tobago. It is generally believed to be the Lord Shorty (born Garfield Blackman) was created. He noticed that Calypso musicthreatened by the popular reggae music and dying and tried a new hybrid that was appealing to the masses to create. He fused Indian music with calypso music and this has led to an energetic hybrid called Solki, later known as the Soca. Lord Shorty introduced soca to the world in 1973 with his hit song, Indrani.
Of course, the Soca music of the seventies is very different from what exists today. Today there are two types, namely Power Soca and Groovy Soca. What is the main difference between the two?
Power soca music is very fast, each time with about 160 beats per minute. The music is mostly of an educational nature. Soca artists thrive on motivating audiences to respond to their dancing instructions. Power soca music is largely music to jump, wave and "wine" to. ("Wine" comes from the "wind" and the word is a type of dance that consists of hip movements). Crowd reaction is key.
Trinidad Soca artist credited with Super Bluewith the launch of the "jump and wave" craze. His success with this type of soca was so incredible that since then most soca songs with a lot of sense, the reaction can be written.
Today, the challenge for power soca songwriters songs that move the audience, but is not a regurgitation of the jump and wave to write his theme. This is not the easiest of tasks due to the nature of the festival that soca music is centered around. Soca music is largely carnival music. From Carnivalit's all about jumping and waving, the music, it must be possible to produce this stimulates activity. Increasingly, write with artists, songs that are not necessarily to "jump and wave" or waving rags and flags of succeeding. In an attempt to stay clear of monotony, have themes such as love, peace and cooperation was very common.
Groovy soca music is probably a better way to drive forward Soca music worldwide. And 'much slower, around 115 beats per minute. This new typeSoca allows a wider range of issues to be addressed. Unlike the total frenzy, the rise to power Soca, Soca music is groovy rock and dance slowly. Artists like Kevin Lyttle and Rupee have demonstrated that this type of music is very palatable to mainstream music markets, with international hits such as "Turn Me On" and "tried to touch", respectively. Another artist of international fame with groovy / crossover soca is added, the Barbados-based artist, Alison Hinds.
II think it should be close to each other fast and groovy soca music to exist. I readily accept all variations of soca and put none against the other. The music is dynamic. Throughout history no genre has always remained the same, and hybrids are constantly created.
In addition to power and groovy soca, other types of Ragga Soca Soca and Chutney Soca Music.
Ragga soca is a fusion of dancehall and soca music. Ragga soca performers include Trinidians, Bunji Garlin and Maximus Dan
ChutneySoca is an East Indian chutney music and soca mix. Chutney Soca is an up-tempo, rhythmic type of music, from traditional Indian musical instruments such as tax dholak, the harmonium and accompanied dhantal.
The line of demarcation between the different kinds of soca music is defined less and less clear. Sometimes it can be very difficult and controversial to the point that is groovy, power, or ragga soca. There is so much fusion taking place that it is often difficult to tell whethera song is really a soca song. For example, some have argued that "Roll It Gal Alison Hinds hit 'is not really a soca song but an R & B song with influences from the West Indies. While I do not hold this view, goes to show that there are clear distinctions and definitions. Soca music, like other forms of music is an art and not be limited to a specific or exclusive mold.
Soca music is largely competitive. Every year artists go to a carnival to outdo each other inCompetitions such as Soca Monarch and Road March. Soca Monarch competition on artists known to the general public and are classified by a jury. A road march song is the song that played the street during a carnival parade. Every Caribbean island has its own competitions. Prices in hundreds of thousands of dollars for each winner, especially in Trinidad and Tobago amount.
Some of the greatest artists in the Soca industry have bowed out of competition. These include big names such as Machel Montano, Bunji Garlin and KMC. The popular view is that "music is a mission, not competition." Personally, I found these competitions are a very strong negative, undesirable friction between artists. As an artist I had my own struggles. However so much fun to win, it will be hard to stop. Fans can relentlessly urged artists to compete against their will. The way these competitions are set is to go easyunnoticed if not, unless you already firmly rooted in the market.
Popular soca performers include Machel Montano, Destra, Alison Hinds, Atlantik, KMC, Shurwayne Winchester, Denise Belfon, Bomani, Bunji Garlin, Iwer George, Bomani, Kevin Lyttle, Tizzy, Maximus Dan, Mr Killa, Mantius, Fireman Hooper, Jamesy P Tallpree, Claudette Peters, burning flames, Nicole David, Ricky T, Qpid and Krosfyah.
Some of the biggest Soca hits the world as "Turn MeOn "Kevin Lyttle," Tempted to Touch "by Rupee," Who Let the Dogs Out "by Baha Men (originally sang by Anselm Douglas)," Sweet Soca Music "by Sugar Daddy," Nookie "by Jamesy P," Hot Hot Hot "by Buster Poindexter (originally sang by Arrow) and" Follow the Leader "by Soca Boys (originally sang by Nigel and Marvin Lewis).
Instrumentation
Brass instruments like trumpets and trombones are very typical of soca music. Sometimes, the saxophone is made of brassSections. While these tools are still in use in live performances, synthesizers and samplers are increasingly replacing, especially in the recording studio and small gigs. Soca is very percussion and drums driven and these are often very strong in the Mix Soca. The bass is very important. Other instruments used include guitars and keyboards.
Leading soca to the production of the Caribbean islands including Trinidad and Tobago, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Lucia, Grenada, Barbados andAntigua and Barbuda.
